P-Trap

Definition

A P-Trap is a "P"-shaped drain connection that prevents sewer gas from escaping from a plumbing fixture by retaining water in the trap to act as a seal.

Purpose

The primary purpose of a P-Trap is to create a water seal that prevents sewer gases from entering living spaces through the plumbing system. This seal is maintained by holding a small amount of water in the curved section of the trap, which blocks the gases.

Examples of Use

• Bathroom Sinks: Installed beneath sinks to prevent odors from the sewer system from entering the bathroom.
• Kitchen Sinks: Used in kitchen plumbing to block sewer gases while allowing waste water to drain properly.
• Bathtubs and Showers: Integrated into the drainage system to maintain a seal and prevent sewer gas infiltration.
