Pilaster

Definition

A pilaster is a vertical, integral stiffening rib in a masonry or concrete wall. It is a portion of a square column, usually set within or against a wall.

Purpose

Pilasters are used to provide structural reinforcement to walls, increasing their load-bearing capacity and resistance to lateral forces. They also add decorative architectural elements to buildings.
