Flashing

Definition

Flashing is a material used to waterproof surfaces where the roof membrane is interrupted by projections or changes in plane. It is a thin, continuous sheet of metal, plastic, rubber, or waterproof paper used to prevent water passage through joints in walls, roofs, or at chimneys.

Purpose

The purpose of Flashing is to prevent water from penetrating the building envelope at joints, intersections, and penetrations, thereby protecting the structure from water damage and leaks.
